'BL' should be used as the definition of 'wasted opportunity'. If they had just built the damn things properly, I reckon this would have sold a ton in Australia if they had put it into production. Same goes for the 4-door both in Oz and in the States.

Yeah, and only about a quarter of the cars they did build were put together properly.

Still, do the rest of the work yourself and you get a stonking machine.

They weren't any worse than Ladas though. I heard horror stories of workers putting in door hinge bolts with sledge hammers.

Possibly, but I definitely think that failure (or inability) to capitalise on the opportunities granted to them was their big issue, along with workforce unrest sabotaging pretty much every level of the company.

Most of their products were competitive (bar a couple of complete flops, a la Allegro), they were just so poorly made and quality tested that it soured the public's view of the whole company.
